🔋 Microsoft Introduces Phi-3 Small Language Model Powerhouse

Image: Microsoft

Microsoft, has announced the release of Phi-3, a new family of small language models that outperform larger rivals, setting new benchmarks for performance in the class of smaller-sized AI models.

The Details:

  • The Phi-3 model family comes in three sizes: Phi-3-mini with 3.8B parameters, Phi-3-small with 7B parameters, and Phi-3-medium with 14B parameters.

  • Despite its significantly smaller size, Phi-3-mini`s benchmarks rival those of Mixtral and GPT 3.5, while also boasting an impressive 128k context window.

  • The compact 3.8B parameter size of Phi-3-mini enables efficient on-device deployment while maintaining quality and cost-effectiveness.

  • Microsoft is still training the larger 7B Phi-3-small and 14B Phi-3-medium models, which will also be available in the coming weeks.

Why it matters: With the Phi-3 family, Microsoft demonstrates that smaller language models can punch well above their weight class when trained with the right data and techniques. The Phi-3-mini, in particular, represents a massive breakthrough, paving the way for high-performing models to run efficiently on mobile devices and opening up new possibilities for on-device AI applications.

🧬 OpenCRISPR-1: World`s First Open-Source AI-Designed Gene Editor.

Source: Profluent | The physical structure of OpenCRISPR-1

Profluent, an AI-first company, has launched OpenCRISPR-1, the world`s first open-source, AI-developed gene editor capable of editing the human genome, with the aim of accelerating the development of treatments for genetic diseases.

The Details:

  • Profluent trained large language models (LLMs) on a vast dataset of diverse CRISPR systems to generate millions of new CRISPR-like proteins not found in nature.

  • OpenCRISPR-1, one of the AI-generated gene editors, performed as well as or better than naturally occurring gene editors.

  • Profluent`s CEO, Ali Madani, stated that the success of OpenCRISPR-1 points to a future where AI can “precisely design what is needed to create a range of bespoke cures for disease.”

  • To make gene-editing technology more accessible to researchers working on disease treatments, Profluent has open-sourced the OpenCRISPR-1 model.

Why it matters: Gene editing already holds immense potential to revolutionize the medical field, and the integration of AI through tools like OpenCRISPR-1 could take it to a whole new level. These AI-designed gene editors have the potential to accelerate innovation, reduce costs, and improve access to life-altering treatments for genetic diseases, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide.
