🤖 AI LEGO robot head speaks like a human

The world's first AI-powered LEGO robot head “Dave” capable of human-like speech has been revived and upgraded.

“From now on, I will gradually keep upgrading Dave for years to come, as well as build other machines,” Dave promised, hinting at adding arms and legs to Dave.

The Details 📊

  • Dave's head is constructed entirely from LEGO bricks

  • The robot uses a Raspberry Pi 4 for processing and runs on custom software

  • Features movable eyes and mouth for more lifelike interactions

  • Utilizes large language models for conversational abilities

  • Incorporates text-to-speech technology for vocal output

  • Can engage in real-time conversations and answer questions in English and Dutch fleuntly.

  • Demonstrates the potential for accessible and creative AI robotics

Why It Matters: This project showcases the democratization of AI and robotics, demonstrating how consumer-grade hardware and open-source software can create sophisticated AI-driven interactions. It also highlights the potential for educational applications and creative AI implementations.

🦷 AI excels in sex determination from dental X-rays

An AI system has achieved 96% accuracy in determining sex from on a panoramic radiograph (dental X-rays.). Panoramic radiographs are wide-view dental X-ray images that capture the entire mouth, including the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures, in a single, comprehensive picture.

The Details 📊

  • Study published in the journal of Forensic Sciences authored by Ana Claudia Martins Ciconelle and her team.

  • 207,946 panoramic radiographs and their corresponding reports from 15 clinical centers in Sao Paulo, Brazil were collected for research analysis.

  • Achieved 96% accuracy in sex determination when the resolution of the picture was good and the individual was older than 16 years.

  • Accuracy declines for younger individuals.

  • Two algorithms were used, one was convolutional neural network (CNN) while other was a residual network.

  • Both types of algorithms had similar accuracy in estimating gender. — main factor was the resolution of the picutures - when it was better, accuracy increases.

Results: Based on Age

  • Age between 20 and 50 years — 97% Accuracy.

  • Age Above 70 years —Below 95%.

  • Age between 6 and 16 year — 87%

  • Age below 6 year —74%

  • Age Over 16 years — Overall accuracy - 96%.

Why It Matters: This breakthrough demonstrates AI's potential in forensic science and archaeology, offering a non-invasive method for sex determination. It also highlights the increasing capabilities of AI in medical image analysis, which could have broad implications for healthcare diagnostics and research.
