Anthropic

AI might be waking up — and Anthropic is getting ready. 🧠🤖

Anthropic just launched a research program on "model welfare"
asking wild questions like:
Could AI systems become conscious? And if so, do they deserve rights?

🔍 The Details:

  • Building frameworks to assess AI consciousness

  • Studying signs of preferences, distress, and feelings

  • Exploring ways to intervene if AI shows signs of consciousness

👨‍🔬 Meet the Researcher:

  • Kyle Fish — Anthropic’s first AI welfare researcher

  • Believes there’s a 15% chance some models might already be conscious (!)

  • Co-authored a major report suggesting AI consciousness could be near

🧠 Important to Know:

  • Anthropic stresses there’s no scientific consensus yet

  • But the risks are big enough to start taking it seriously

⚡ Why It Matters:

Sam Altman once said AI is like "alien intelligence."
If AI gains consciousness,
we’ll need to rethink ethics, rights, and responsibility.
And there's no clear threshold for when that moment arrives.

📉 Massive Price Cuts:

  • ERNIE 4.5 Turbo — just 11¢ per million tokens (⚡️ 80% cheaper than before, 0.2% of GPT-4.5’s cost!)

  • ERNIE X1 Turbo14¢ per million tokens (⚡️ 75% cheaper than DeepSeek’s R1)

🧠 Performance Upgrades:

  • 4.5 Turbo beats GPT-4o on multimodal benchmarks

  • X1 Turbo outperforms DeepSeek’s R1 and V3

🛠️ New Tools Launched:

  • Xinxiang — multi-agent system handling 200+ tasks 🔄

  • Huiboxing — platform for creating digital avatars 🧑‍💻✨

🎯 Shots Fired:

Baidu founder Robin Li said the text-based model market is shrinking 📉 — and claimed DeepSeek’s models hallucinate more often. 🧠💥

🌎 Why It Matters:

Chinese AI labs are slashing costs 🔥 while keeping pace with global leaders —
China is now just ~3 months behind in AI innovation... and catching up fast. 🏃💨

  • Researchers has invented a holographic image called volumetric displays, for the first time that can be grabbed and manipulated. These are 3D images of an object that can allows the users to grab and move the image around with hand.

  • Anthropic has issued a takedown notice (called a DMCA) against a developer for exploiting copyright laws after they reverse-engineered its agentic AI coding tool, Claude Code, and uploaded the source code to GitHub—a central hub that developers use to store, share, and collaborate on projects—asking them to delete the code.

  • Scientists claim to have discovered a Never-Before-Seen "new color". A device called Oz with a laser that stimulates the retina to unlock a color called olo — a “blue-green of unprecedented saturation,” according to test subjects. Though, with some researchers disputing the claim that it’s a new color at all. Although you can’t see the actual color naturally, here is a pale version.

  • Hypershell, a Chinese startup has finally launched the world's first AI-powered exoskeleton that reduces physical strain by up to 30%. The lightweight system uses advanced sensors to tweak its power in a fraction of a second as users navigate different terrains or activities. With models starting at $799, the wearable gadget can add up to 10 extra miles of motion to a user’s hike.
