OpenAI has just wrapped up its “12 Days of OpenAI” with a showstopper: the launch of the O3 model family—o3 and o3-mini. These groundbreaking models push the boundaries of reasoning and technical performance.

Here’s what you need to know:

What’s so special about O3?

The O3 model is a game-changer across multiple domains:

• Coding: Achieved an ELO rating of 2727 on Codeforces, a jaw-dropping 800 points higher than its predecessor, the o1 model.

• Math: Scored an impressive 96.7% on AIME (up from 83.3%) and 25.2% on EpochAI's toughest Frontier Math benchmark (most models barely manage 2%).

• Scientific Reasoning: Outperformed PhD-level experts by scoring 87.7% on GPQA Diamond.

• Conceptual Thinking: Scored 87.5% on ARC-AGI, surpassing human performance (85%)—a major milestone in AI reasoning.

What about O3-Mini?

Think of O3-Mini as the cost-effective sibling:

• Optimized for coding but still a powerhouse in reasoning.

• Features adjustable reasoning modes (low, medium, high) for tailored task performance.

When can I try it?

For now, only select researchers have access for safety testing. Public release? O3-Mini arrives in January 2025, with the full O3 model shortly after.
