OpenAI just launched SWE-Lancer, a new benchmark designed to test AI’s software engineering skills against real-world freelance jobs—with $1M in actual payouts on the line.

How does it work?
🔹 1,400 freelance coding tasks from Upwork, ranging from quick bug fixes to complex feature builds.
🔹 Models are graded on coding ability and technical decision-making, mimicking real engineering work.
🔹 Success isn’t just about accuracy—it’s about how much AI could theoretically "earn" by completing tasks.
The results?
💡 No model aced the test, but Claude 3.5 Sonnet came out on top, solving nearly half the tasks and “earning” $400K out of $1M.
Why does it matter?
AI benchmarks are getting tougher, but can they keep up with AI’s rapid progress? And while models “struggled,” pulling in $400K worth of work isn’t exactly failing—it's a glimpse at the massive disruption headed for software development.

Freelancers are getting a new AI-powered toolkit. Fiverr just dropped Fiverr Go, an AI suite designed to help gig workers train models on their work, automate tasks, and scale faster. But that’s not all—top performers are getting a piece of the company through an equity program.

Why It Matters:
AI is reshaping gig work, and Fiverr is putting freelancers inside the automation wave instead of making them compete against it. While this could help some creators scale their business, it might also spark backlash from those who feel pressured into adopting AI.

OpenAI’s former CTO Mira Murati officially announced Thinking Machines Lab, a new AI research company, out of stealth with the plans to develop frontier models focused on science and programming with an emphasis on human-AI collaboration and multimodality.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted a poll on X asking what project users would like to see open-sourced, with an “o3-mini” level model leading over a “phone-sized model.”
HP acquired Humane’s AI pin software platform and team for $116M and will discontinue its AI Pin hardware, with plans to integrate AI capabilities across HP’s device portfolio.
