DeepSeek's R1 Overtakes OpenAIās o1, Slashes Costs by Over 90%
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab, has shaken the AI world with the release of DeepSeek-R1, an open-source reasoning model that rivals or even surpasses OpenAI's o1 on several key benchmarks. The best part? It costs developers just 5-10% of o1ās API price.

The Details:
Unlike traditional GPT models, R1 adopts a reasoning approach similar to OpenAIās o1. While it takes more time, it delivers more reliable results, especially in physics, science, and math.
The model boasts 671 billion parameters, but smaller, "distilled" versions with as few as 1.5 billion parameters can run locally on a laptop.
R1 outperforms o1 on several benchmarks, including AIME, MATH-500, and SWE-bench Verified.
Itās available under an MIT license for commercial use, with a significantly lower costājust $0.14 per million input tokens compared to o1ās $7.5.
Why It Matters:
Open-source AI has hit a major milestone by matching ChatGPT's current capabilities on critical benchmarks. The irony? Itās not OpenAI, but DeepSeek, a Chinese company, leading the charge in openly sharing their models and training methodologies.
