• Google DeepMind has open-sourced an upgraded version of Perch, an AI model that helps scientists analyze massive wildlife audio datasets. With double the training data from its 2023 version, it can now identify species across environments like forests and coral reefs. The model includes tools that detect rare species and reduce hours of manual work.

• Zoox, Amazon’s self-driving taxi company, just got approval from U.S. regulators to test its unique driverless pods that have no steering wheel or pedals. The exemption covers 64 vehicles and allows them to be used for demos, not for commercial rides. Zoox had self-certified its safety in 2022, but regulators found issues and launched a probe. The exemption clears that up, though future vehicles aren’t covered yet. Zoox now plans to build more taxis at its California factory.

• Tesla has officially ended its Dojo supercomputer project, citing internal inefficiencies and leadership turnover, including the exit of architect Peter Bannon. Elon Musk confirmed the move, stating Tesla will no longer split efforts across disparate AI chip designs. The company is now focusing on AI5 and AI6 chips, which Musk claims will be “excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training.”
