Google Vids now lets users bring their images to life with AI avatars that speak naturally, creating polished videos without having to record live. Google is also adding its Veo 3 image-to-video-generation tool to Vids, which will let users create short clips from still images using prompts. A free consumer version with limited features is now available, while advanced features can be accessed with paid Workspace plans.
a16z, VC firm (founded by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz), published the 5th edition of its AI report - The Top 100 AI Consumer Apps - which showcases 2.5 years of data about how consumers are using AI products, from general assistance and companionship to image and video editing. Interestingly, it looks like Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s Grok are closing the gap on OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
OpenAI is retiring its Assistants API, giving developers until August 26, 2026, to migrate to the newer Responses API. Assistants were the company’s early approach to building AI agents, but with Responses reaching feature parity, OpenAI has folded the best elements, including code interpreter and persistent conversations, into the new system.
Meta has just licensed Midjourney’s generative image and video models, bringing the startup’s distinctive “aesthetic technology” into Meta’s future AI stack. Announced by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, the deal complements Meta’s in-house work on Imagine, Movie Gen, and DinoV3 while positioning it to better compete with OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Black Forest Labs’ Flux.
