• OpenAI is reportedly working on a new model called “Garlic” after internally calling a Code Red in response to Google’s recent Gemini gains. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen briefed staff on the project, describing Garlic as a smaller, more efficient model that still matches or beats some Gemini 3 results in internal tests. This model addresses structural issues found in earlier versions like GPT-4.5 and could be released as GPT-5.2 or 5.5 early next year.

• Runway releases the newest top-rated text-to-video model setting a new standard for video generation, excelling at physics and human motion. The new model outranks Veo 3, Sora 2 Pro, and other leading models on the Artificial Analysis Text to Video Leaderboard.

• Gemini app downloads are reportedly catching up to ChatGPT, though it remains the most popular AI chatbot with 85 million monthly downloads in October. But Gemini is closing the gap with 64 million downloads, up from 16 million in August. Gemini users also spend more time chatting than ChatGPT or Claude users. The trend is in large part driven by Gemini’s enhanced image generation capabilities.

• Nvidia-backed startup Figure AI is being sued by its former head of product safety, Robert Gruendel, who claims he was fired days after warning executives that the company's robots were "powerful enough to fracture a human skull." Gruendel alleges the company gutted its safety roadmap right after closing a $39B valuation round two months ago. Figure denies the claims, setting up what could be the first major whistleblower case in the industry.
